A holistic ministry to the HIV affected and infected
Genesis is a registered public benefit organisation that was formed by the Norwegian Settlers Church, Marburg, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa in 2002. It was formed in response to the incredible needs of the community. Grace, mercy and hope through Jesus Christ is the message Genesis, as a ministry of the Norwegians Settlers Church, seeks to share with the lost, destitute and ill of the communities surrounding Port Shepstone on the South Coast of KwaZulu-Natal.
Challenged by the devastating impact of HIV and AIDS, and the urgent need for a safe place providing end-of-life care for people without homes or families who are dying of HIV and AIDS, Genesis established the Genesis Care Centre as the flagship programme of its ministry. In March 2005, the first 20-bed ward was opened, and with generous support from Churches, companies and individuals, the second 20-bed ward was opened in May 2007.
Patients with AIDS receive holistic care while at the Genesis Care Centre. Physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs are addressed.
Genesis along with Two Tunics is a founding member of the Ugu AIDS Alliance, an alliance of Christian organizations working in the area of HIV/AIDS in the Ugu District. Recently in partnership with Two Tunics and Project Positive Ray a VCT (Voluntary Counseling and Testing) program has begun at Genesis. In the future Genesis plans to expand its treatment and support of the HIV infected through outpatient wellness and follow-up care programs.
Two Tunics provides technical assistance to Genesis in the area of HIV care. Dr Mike Nash fills the role of Medical Director of the Genesis Care Centre and oversees all aspects of medical care provided. Two Tunics has assisted Genesis in its successful application for funding from USAID through the PEPFAR program. This grant started in 2006 and will provide funding to help sustain Genesis through 2009 and hopefully beyond. |
